AutPlay® Therapy is a 'Neurodiversity Affirming' play and behavioural therapy approach to working with children and families affected by autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, dysregulation issues, and other neurodevelopmental disorders. Created by Dr. Robert Jason Grant, AutPlay® Therapy integrates therapeutic models of play and behavioural therapy along with relationship development approaches together in a collaborative model.
Autplay® Therapy is a combination of behavioural and developmental methodology that is both a therapist and parent-led approach that values and respects the different ways an autistic or neurodivergent client may process, feel, respond, communicate, and play. Allowing the child to be themselves not a neurotypical standard.
AutPlay® Therapy can assist children and adolescents to develop in the following key areas:
Increase Social Skills and Functioning.
Increase Emotional Regulation Ability.
Improve Relationship Development and Connection.
Increase Concentration, Focus, and Attention.
Reducing Anxiety Levels.
Improve Sensory Processing Challenges.
Reducing Unwanted Behaviours.
Improve the Parent/Child Relationship.
When children learn to self-regulate, possess social skills that relate to the environments they are asked to function in, and learn appropriate and meaningful relationship connections, they are less likely to have behavioural issues and more likely to function in their day-to-day environment successfully.
As AutPlay® Therapy is an integrative family approach, a parent training component is incorporated which values parents as co-change agents and teaches parents how to implement structured playtimes and structured play therapy interventions at home.
These interventions are typically chosen by the therapist (although parents can participate in choosing interventions) parents learn the procedures and techniques which when also followed at home helps to further increase skill and ability levels in their child.
This method develops a positive connection process with parent and child. The therapist continues to meet with parents and assists parents in implementing the interventions at home until treatment goals have been met.
AutPlay® Therapy has been successful in improving target areas in children and adolescents with many neurodevelopmental and dysregulation issues including:
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Fragile X Syndrome.
Sensory Processing Challenges.
Intellectual Developmental Disorder.
Social Pragmatic Communication Disorder.
Learning Disorders.
Social Disorders.
Impulsive Disorders.
Cerebral Palsy.
