LEGO® Based Therapy

LEGO® Based Therapy also known at Progressive Play® as LEGO® 'Connexions Club' is a neuro affirming child-led, evidence based, learning through play approach that aims to develop social communication skills in children through collaborative play, skills such as turn-taking and problem-solving.

Children share a fun experience when building together, which also helps to develop social bonds with their peers.

LEGO® Based Therapy was developed by neuropsychologist Dr. LeGoff  in the mid 1990's (LeGoff et al., 2014), and whilst initially developed for autistic children we now know that LEGO® Based Therapy is suitable for all children who may experience communication and other social developmental difficulties.

LEGO® Based Therapy is also beneficial for individuals who experience anxiety, depression, phobias and / or adjustment disorders and has also been proven to be an extremely effective therapy as an intervention for children with speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN).

Our LEGO® 'Connexions Clubs' are run by a qualified health professional and certified LEGO® Based Therapy facilitator who works with children in groups of 3 - 4. Children build a LEGO® model collaboratively and each child takes turns in playing a specific role within the group (see below).

There is also opportunity in every session for children to undertake a freestyle build either in pairs or larger groups (based on the LEGO® Serious Play® concept).

Who is LEGO® Based Therapy for?

Children aged 5-17 years – the difficulty of the LEGO® build should be adapted based on the age and abilities of the children participating.

Why Use LEGO® Based Therapy?

Through LEGO® Based Therapy, children learn to communicate, express their feelings, learn various ways of relating to others, modify their behaviour and develop problem-solving skills.

The LEGO® system is a highly organised, systematic, and predictable toy, therefore highly motivating for children as the unpredictable and ever-changing concepts that occur during other types of free play are removed. The very nature of the LEGO® building system allows children to feel calm, regulated and engaged.

What are the benefits of LEGO® Based Therapy?

LEGO® Based Therapy is a proven research driven therapy model. The various research and studies undertaken found that facilitated group projects utilising LEGO® bricks can help develop and reinforce language, play, and social skills.

Research studies into the benefits of LEGO® Based Therapy programs have shown it can help develop the following skills:

Self-initiated social contact

Extended duration of social interaction

Visual perception

Language concepts

Descriptive language

Positional language

Sequencing and planning

Flexibility

Patience

Empathy

Non-verbal skills

Asking for clarification – resolving communication breakdowns

Memory skills

Motor skills

In all research studies conducted children showed significant gains across all measures following participation.
