LEGO® Based Therapy is an evidence-based, play-based, social communication and development program, pioneered by paediatric neuropsychologist Dr. Daniel LeGoff in the mid 1990's (LeGoff et al, 2014. NB: many cite the mid 2000's however that is factually incorrect). It is a child led, gentle and fun way of helping children develop social communication skills.
LEGO® Based Therapy is a strengths-based program that works by teaching children observation and adaptability skills. Research shows that participants respond more positively to this approach than to any other traditional form of intervention. Participants learn to look to each other for information, support and are able to build relationships in a safe and respectful environment.
LEGO® Based Therapy is used to support children who experience a range of communication and social developmental challenges and is proven to be an effective therapy intervention for both autistic children and children with other neurodevelopmental conditions and children who experience and / or are diagnosed with anxiety disorders, phobias, adjustment disorders, adhd and depression.
LEGO® Based Therapy does not aim to make neurodivergent children communicate or engage more typically, it simply provides children with the tools they need to adapt how they communicate and interact with others in a positive way. It is a fun, connection creating program that helps children to develop peer relationships.

Whilst anyone can offer LEGO® brick building as free play sessions, only persons formally trained and certified in the approach should implement LEGO® Based Therapy programs including; qualified health practitioners / professionals, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, teachers, teaching assistants, social workers, counsellors, allied health assistants, support and childcare workers to name a few. Persons without the appropriate training are not qualified to be delivering any LEGO® Based Therapy interventions.
Through LEGO® Based Therapy, children learn to communicate, express their feelings, learn various ways of relating to others, modify their behaviour and develop problem-solving skills.
The LEGO® System is a highly organised, systematic, and predictable toy, therefore highly motivating for children as the unpredictable and ever-changing concepts that occur during other types of free play do not exist. This very nature of the LEGO® building system allows children to feel calm, regulated and engaged.
Our LEGO® Based Therapy 'Facilitator Certification' course (lego based therapy training / lego therapy training) is unique as it has been adapted and further developed and is aimed at teaching health practitioners / professionals, allied health assistants, teachers / educators, parents and carers about LEGO® Based Therapy and how to successfully implement and run your own LEGO® Based Therapy programs with ease. You will learn the core fundamental processes, advanced application techniques and supporting theories. There is no additional training or certification required in LBT beyond this program.
