 LEGO® Based Therapy

LEGO® Based Therapy is an evidence-informed, child-led, play-based and collaborative methodology pioneered by paediatric neuropsychologist Dr Daniel LeGoff in the mid-1990s.

At the heart of the methodology is collaboration.

Children work together on shared builds, traditionally using defined roles such as Engineer, Supplier and Builder. These roles create natural opportunities to exchange information, negotiate ideas, listen to one another, solve problems and contribute towards a shared goal.

Progressive Play® teaches a contemporary, strengths-based and neuro-affirming approach to LEGO® Based Therapy that respects different communication styles, individual strengths, autonomy, interests and support needs.

The methodology may create opportunities to support areas including communication, collaboration, shared problem-solving, peer relationships, participation, confidence, flexible thinking and a sense of belonging.

LEGO® Based Therapy is much more than simply building with LEGO® bricks. Your certification develops an understanding of its foundations, evidence base, structured methodology, roles, program planning, implementation, observation, documentation and contemporary professional application.

LEGO® Serious Play® – Therapeutic Applications in Mental Health

LEGO® Serious Play® is a facilitated thinking, communication and problem-solving methodology in which participants use LEGO® models, metaphor and storytelling to explore and communicate their thinking.

Rather than asking someone to immediately explain an abstract idea, experience or perspective in words alone, the methodology provides another way to build thinking and make meaning visible.

Participants respond to carefully designed challenges by constructing models, giving meaning to what they have built, sharing the story of their model and engaging in facilitator-guided reflection.

Progressive Play® Therapeutic Applications in Mental Health training teaches the established LEGO® Serious Play® methodology, together with its purposeful application within mental health, counselling, therapeutic, wellbeing and related professional settings.

Depending on the professional context and purpose, LEGO® Serious Play® may provide a different way to explore experiences, perspectives, relationships, strengths, challenges, identity, emotions, goals, possibilities and change.

The builder owns the meaning of their model.

The facilitator creates the process through which that meaning can be explored.

LEGO® Based Therapy is also commonly implemented by teachers and educators within school environments and is not restricted to allied health professionals.

There are no formal pre-requisites, and you do not need previous training in either LEGO® Based Therapy or LEGO® Serious Play®.

You do not need advanced LEGO® building skills.

The training is professional development designed for people who work with, educate or support others within relevant professional settings.

Your existing qualifications, professional role and responsibilities remain important.

Completing facilitator certification adds specialised methodology knowledge and practical facilitation skills to your existing professional toolkit. It does not independently provide an additional clinical, therapeutic, teaching or other regulated professional qualification.

How you subsequently use either methodology should remain appropriate to your existing qualifications, professional responsibilities, scope of practice, work setting and the needs of the people you support. This is consistent with the professional-scope guidance provided in the individual certification programs. 

 Please note: Dual Enrolment does not include a LEGO® Starter Kit or physical LEGO® resources.

Both certification programs include practical, hands-on learning activities, so you will need access to an appropriate variety of LEGO® bricks, elements and minifigures while completing your training.

You do not need to purchase two separate collections of LEGO® bricks.

If you already own a suitable and varied collection of LEGO® bricks, elements and minifigures, you may be able to use these across the practical components of both courses.

For LEGO® Based Therapy, participants commencing without suitable LEGO® materials can purchase a small LEGO® Classic / Creator or City kit / set. 

For LEGO® Serious Play®, participants require a varied collection suitable for model building, metaphor and practical facilitation activities. An official LEGO® Serious Play® Starter Kit #2000414 may be purchased separately, although it is not required if you already have access to an appropriate variety of LEGO® bricks, elements and minifigures.
